The Bishop Grimes girls basketball team, sitting at 15-1 and no. 8 in the state Class C rankings, were home Thursday to face Port Byron. And the Cobras needed needed a big third quarter, plus a career effort from Amanda Marcely, to beat the Panthers 68-53. Unlike many other wins this season, Grimes did not lean on outside shooting, though it did convert six 3-pointers, two each by Tenley Pitonzo and Brooke Bonacci. The treys gave Grimes 113 for the season, breaking the single-season team record of 112 set in 2001-02. Instead, the Cobras turned to Marcely, one of the team’s top forwards, after it used a 7-0 run to close out the first half and surge in front, 27-23, against the stubborn Panthers. Throughout the third period, Grimes moved the ball inside — and Marcely kept converting, 15 points in all. This, combined with increased full-court pressure, led to a 28-10 period as the Cobras led 55-33 at the end of that period. Overall, Marcely had 25 points, a career high, and needed them, since no other Grimes player had more than Erannan Shattuck’s total of eight points. Amelia Heiselman and Cady Kalemba combined for 10 assists. Nica Dare led Port Byron’s effort with 21 points. Now at 16-1, the Cobras have clinched at least a tie for the OHSL Patriot division regular-season title, and can seal the outright championship Tuesday night at Pulaski.
