In a non-league meet Saturday against Hannibal, the Canastota wrestling team was close much of the way before a late surge by the Warriors led to a 44-25 defeat. Zach Zupan, in the second match at 160 pounds, put the Raiders on the board by beating Ed Hatten 11-4. Two matches later, John Carver (189 pounds) struck with a 15-3 romp over Steve Kingsley, with Sam Stagnitti (215 pounds) pinning Nick Williams 33 seconds into the third period. An exchange followed, as Hannibal took three of the next five matches. Brandon Durfee broke in at 119 pounds when Kirk Kinville got disqualified in the first period, but Tyler Sirota (130 pounds) didn’t need any extra help, pinning Nick Bortle in 1:33. Hannibal only got away in the last three matches, winning all of them, the last one an overtime duel where Jeremy Brodfuehrer (145 pounds) fell to Joel Kinville 8-6. Canastota’s only scheduled action this week was a Tuesday-night visit from Chittenango.
