The Skaneateles boys basketball team went to Westhill Friday night and would put a serious scare into the Warriors before a late push by the home team left the Lakers on the wrong side of a 60-49 decision. All through the first quarter, Skaneateles sifted right through Westhill’s well-regarded defense, seizing a 21-15 advantage. Though the Warriors caught up at halftime, 29-29, the two sides remained tight well into the fourth quarter. Only then did the Warriors, led by Mike McMullen (15 points), Dan Ross (12 points) and Tom Fisher (11 points), draw clear with some timely baskets and solid defense. In defeat, Pesarchick led Skaneateles with 13 points. Kyle McQuiggan had 10 points, with Brandon Barron and Paul O’Donnell each getting six points. Will Polacheck did not even score as Rice and Jon Chapman earned five points apiece. A day earlier, the Skaneateles girls basketball team fell to Westhill 55-21, watching as those other Warriors put together an opening 15-2 run and 20-4 outburst in the third quarter. Holly Ross, in defeat, had eight points, while Ashley Sheldon got six points. Carly Cooper led Westhill with 16 points. Though the Lakers got closer in Friday’s game against Hannibal, it still took a 47-42 loss to that other group of Warriors. Only down by one, 19-18, at halftime, Skaneateles saw Hannibal build the margin to 33-27 by the end of the third period, and that would hold up despite the Lakers’ best comeback attempts. Sheldon poured in 13 points, while Emily Call added eight points. Jackie Leslie and Katherine Pille each had five points. Hannibal had Laurel Jicha (15 points), Taylor Sorrell (11 points) and Jamie Perry (10 points) all reach double figures.
