Several residents of the Camillus community have received phone calls in the last week from an unknown caller, soliciting donations for the Camillus Fire Department, CFD President Jesse Norcross said Thursday morning. The only problem is, the department is not behind the calls.
“We’ve heard from some residents that they’ve been receiving calls from either an individual or some sort of group claiming to be the Camillus Fire Department and they’re soliciting for donations,” Norcross said. “At this point, the Camillus Fire Department is not soliciting donations over the phone.” Norcross said he alerted the Camillus Police Department to the phony calls, and anyone who receives such a solicitation is asked to call the police at 487-0102 to report the incident. If a phone number is available through caller ID to help identify the caller, please document the number and share it with police, Norcross said. He added that at this point he has no idea who the caller could be, whether it is a local individual or group or a scam originating outside the area. “Hopefully whoever is doing it sees it on the news and stops,” Norcross said.
If you would like to donate to CFD, call the department directly at 672-9207. The department will provide you with an official donation form and a receipt, Norcross said.
