Having started to click, the Baldwinsville girls basketball team rose above the .500 mark for the first time all season. That came Tuesday night, at Auburn, where the Bees’ seized the early advantage, then held on down the stretch to beat the Maroons 57-54. In a fast-paced first half, the two teams traded lots of baskets, but B’ville went in front and would stay there, going to the break ahead 38-35. Defense returned in the last two periods, which is just what the Bees wanted, as it put on enough pressure to make sure that the Maroons could not make the surge it needed to catch up. B’ville had nice inside-outside balance. Lauren Brower worked in the paint for 20 points, while Maggie Monnat had 15 points and Erika Bulken added 11 points, each of them connecting on three 3-point shots. Claire Monnat added seven points. For Auburn, Nikki Schattinger (13 points), Taylor Baran (12 points) and Jeanice Freeman (10 points) all hit double figures. Now at 6-5 following that win, the Bees will get a severe challenge Thursday when it hosts defending Class AA champion Corcoran.
