Water chestnuts spreading in local waters

So far, the most effective way to at least control the spread of water chestnuts has been by individual hand pulling, which has succeeded in certain areas, but it has to be a constant, and not just an occasional effort, DeHollander said. Many individuals and volunteer organizations are doing their best to keep ahead of the problem including the Brewerton Rotary Club and the Bass Masters group.

The water chestnut is actually edible and is a food staple in China. But unlike everything else that is made in China and consumed in the U.S., the water chestnut has not shown up on the local grocery shelf.
