B'ville: Dreams do come true

Olympic Gold Medalist Abby Wombach held a free soccer clinic at Baldwinsville's CNY Family Sports Centre Sept. 6.

Sponsored by MVP Health Care, more than 350 local youth soccer players participated in the event that featured Wombach and other volunteer coaches (including many coaches on staff at the CNY Family Sports Centre) exhibiting basic skills and the value of teamwork through drills and demonstrations.

"She's a forward for the U.S. National Women's Soccer Team, a gold medalist, World Cup Champion and former U.S. Player of the Year," said Pete Ramin, director of operations at CNY Family Sports Centre. "The list goes on -- she has also scored 99 goals in 125 appearances for the US National Team."

Wambach, who grew up in Rochester, said she wants to inspire children to believe that dreams can be achieved. Aside from soccer, the leading scorer of the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team said she wants kids to learn the importance of staying healthy and being active.

"It was great for the young players in our community to be able come out and meet Abby. She is a superstar and a real positive role model for many of our young soccer players," Ramin said.

The Jones Road Soccer facility offers many indoor soccer opportunities for both youth and adults. If your child is interested in playing indoor soccer this fall, CNY Family Sports Centre programs begin in October including a Columbus Day Soccer Camp held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 13. A new session of micro-soccer, a beginner's clinic for 3- to 8-year-olds, will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 20.

Serious players looking to join indoor teams should contact the Sports Centre at 638-8866 or check out information at cnyfsc.com.
