VanBeveren, who student-taught 11th graders at Liverpool High School while attending Le Moyne College, said one of her biggest assets as a teacher is life experience, being an older graduate. Compared to a teacher straight out of college, VanBeveren said she is more apt to pick up on kids' tactics such as texting.
As for chief qualities a successful teacher must possess, VanBeveren emphasized two: to collaborate with colleagues and to be approachable to students.
With her first week of school behind her -- and not a single catastrophe to report -- VanBeveren can safely catch a good night's sleep again. She's earned it.
