B'ville Shacksboro event offers thousands of books

The 18th annual used book sale at The Museum at the Shacksboro Schoolhouse will open at 5 p.m. Thursday Sept. 4. The five-day event will run through the weekend and close at 8 p.m. Monday Sept. 8.

First held in 1991, this year's event promises to be bigger than ever. Last year it was estimated that more than 10,000 volumes were offered for sale.

Used books of every variety, both hard cover and paperback, are presented under more than 3,000 square feet of tents set up on the museum grounds at 46 Canton St. in Baldwinsville's McHarrie Park. The books are sorted by category and large printed signs mark their location.

Categories cover the gamut of printed material from children's books to fiction, mystery, romance, biography, history, cooking, gardening, crafts, poetry, literature, classics, reference, philosophy, religion, science, nature, pets, self-help, science fiction, how-to and several more. A variety of records, videos, cassettes and CDs will also be available.

All of the books have been donated. The museum accepts donations throughout the year with the exception of a six-week period from mid-August through September. The only items not included in the event are magazines, Reader's Digest Condensed books and encyclopedia.

Hundreds of volunteer hours precede the actual sale. Books are collected, transported to a storage area, priced, sorted, packed and labeled. On Labor Day a team of volunteers turns out to erect a small tent city on the museum grounds. The following morning Baldwinsville's Baker High School varsity football team turns out to move the towering stacks of boxes from the storage site to the museum grounds. The next day and a half finds dozens of volunteer hands opening cases and arranging books on the sale tables. By 5 p.m. Thursday a well organized, illuminated bookshop is ready to open.

The sale runs from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday Sept. 4; from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday Sept. 5; from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday Sept. 6 and 7; and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday Sept. 8. Proceeds from the sale benefit The Museum at the Shacksboro Schoolhouse, the local history facility serving Greater Baldwinsville.

The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday from Noon until 4 p.m. throughout the entire year. It offers changing exhibitions, programs, special events and a museum shop. For more information call 638-2452 or visit the museum's web site at shacksboromuseum.com.
