When I walked into La Petit Gateau Cupcake Caf (c), I was immediately hit with the smell of freshly baked muffins and as my mouth was watering, I saw cakes, cookies, turnovers, bagels, loaves of bread, and of course, cupcakes beautifully displayed in glass cases.
I found the Caf (c) to be charming, with many cozy table and chair sets throughout, along with a children's area with coloring books and crayons.
I had come to meet with a very busy lady, Yvonne Pfeifer, the head baker of the Caf (c). Pfeifer has been baking since she was 16 years old. She has been the head baker at the Caf (c) for four months now. After talking with Yvonne, I found that she truly loves what she does and takes a great amount of pride in her work.
Describe your typical day at the Caf (c).
"I come in about 7 a.m. and get the case ready. I get the coffee going, unwrap everything, and start making muffins, bagels, and cookies all while waiting on people. We are serving breakfast now Monday through Friday, so I make omelets, bagel sandwiches, Belgian waffles, eggs, bacon, ham and hash browns too. By the time I look up, it is 3 p.m. and time to go!"
What is your favorite part of your job?
"I love baking and being with people."
What do you do in your free time?
"I have three kids and they take up a lot of my time. I have a 12-year-old daughter and two sons, ages 8 and 4. I would say that my kids are my hobbies!"
How did you get started in this business?
"I grew up in Otisco and graduated from Marcellus High School in 1994. I always cooked with my grandparents. I enrolled in the Pastry Arts two-year program through BOCES. I worked as the head pastry chef at Frambois in Skaneateles for years before starting here."
