Onondaga's fallen remembered

Comfort for family members

Phillip Hadlich said he thought the memorial service was great. His father, Curt Hadlich, had served on the Camillus and Howlett Hill Fire departments for 30 years. "It was a huge part of his life, he held every position in the fire department, just about."

Dee Spraker, Secretary for the County Fire Chief's Association and the County Volunteer Firemen's Association helps to organize the program. She sends letters inviting family members of the deceased firefighters and auxiliary members. She echoed her husband's words, "We are one big family. You go through the good and the bad."

Mary Enright joined the Fairmount Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary when her husband became a volunteer firefighter in 1952. Dan Enright died this year.

"The camaraderie is like family," Mary said. "The ladies are always there to make coffee and provide sandwiches, no matter what time."

At least 70 people participated in the 15th annual service, including Peter Alberti, director of the Department of Emergency Management for the county and Sen. John DeFrancisco.
