Each side in the neighborhood track and field feud between East Syracuse-Minoa and Jamesville-DeWitt left last Wednesday's showdown with some satisfaction.
On the boys side, the Spartans came out on top by a narrow 72-69 margin, but the Red Rams prevailed on the girls end 85-56. Both sides easily beat Fowler in this three-way OHSL Freedom division meet.
ESM's distance runners made a difference on the boys side. Jeff Sweeney ran the mile in 4:43.1, as Craig Andrianos took the 800-meter run in 2:09.4 and Nick Sadlocha needed 10:04.9 to prevail at 3,200 meters. Sweeney, Sadlocha, Andrianos and Pete Frestler combined to win the 4x800 relay in 8:38.4.
In field events, Lenny Kerznowski won the long jump, going 20 feet 3 3/4 inches, while Andy Kirkpatrick took the discus with a toss of 105 feet.
J-D dominated the other field events, with Adam Tyson Clearing 11 feet 6 inches in the pole vault and David Salbert clearing 6 feet in the high jump. Nick Buniak's long jump of 20 feet 3 1/2 inches left him just behind Kerznowski.
Tyson also prevailed in the 110-meter high hurdles (16.8 seconds), as Eric Semmel took the 400-meter hurdles in 1:04.4. Buniak, Salbert, Semmel and Dexter Green took the 4x100 relay (45.3 seconds) as Vern Edwards, Mark Smith, Tim Kendrick and Bumkuth Jiak won the 4x400 relay in a clocking of 3:43.2.
To win on the girls side, the Red Rams needed Natalie Mannion to win the long jump (15 feet 8 inches), as she also tied Emily Whalen in the long jump, both clearing 4 feet 10 inches. Amanda Tan cleared 8 feet in the pole vault.
On the oval, Eileen Cody roared to victories in the 800-meter run (2:40.9) and 1,500-meter run, the latter event in 5:19.8. Kathryn Blackley added a title in the 400-meter dash (1:03 flat) as Destiny Jett needed 1:14 to prevail in the 400 hurdles.
Jett and Mannion teamed with Grace Bradshaw and Linsay Royer to win the 4x400 relay in 4:24.9, with Cody and Bradshaw helping Gabi Barry and Paige Morrow in the 4x800 relay, where J-D won in 11:44.4.
ESM won four titles at this meet. Asisat Adebola prevailed in both the shot put (31 feet 3 inches) and discus (87 feet), while Jill Mitchell had a top triple jump of 30 feet 6 3/4 inches. Mitchell, Adebola, Lulu Klick and Danielle Steigerwold took the 4x100 relay in 53.6 seconds.
