East Syracuse: Trillium members get 'group' results

What makes Trillium Fitness unique?

It's the only fitness center in Syracuse that offers LesMills, an international group exercise program that's based in New Zealand.

"The days of what we used to call aerobics are kind of behind us now," said Don Murphy, the Northeast LesMills agent. "This is group fitness."

What's the difference?

The LesMIlls programs are suitable to everybody, according to Murphy, with different levels available in which to follow along during the class. If you're a fitness novice and want a lower level workout, you just follow one of the leaders offering modified moves. If you're an athlete, you can choose a high intensity routine.

"It's for anybody," said Beth Dailey of Liverpool. "It's for people who haven't worked out before and it's for people who are very athletic and very fit and workout is part of their life."

Dailey is a Trillium member and LesMills participant who also joined the club's "Big Loser" program -- another team-inspired plan that combines nutritional guidance and personal training. In two years, she's lost 98 lbs.

"I went from not working out since high school for a lot of years, not doing much of anything like this, to joining these classes at the highest intensity that you can do," Dailey said.

LesMills classes are led by certified instructors who continually change up the choreography to keep the programs fresh and appealing.

"It's fabulous," Dailey said. "It can be a challenge."

Uncomfortable exercising in groups?

You're not alone, according to Murphy. People are self conscious at first but it eventually fades, he said.

"We're all in the same boat," said Trillium employee Trina Carman. "The bottom line is you want to be healthy."

Trillium Fitness Center is located at 601 Manlius Center Road in East Syracuse. Call 463-9355 for more information on LesMills.
