Madison County: Help for seniors filing stimulus packets

The IRS has recently mailed Stimulus Payment packets to all seniors who do not normally file a tax return.

Everything needed to file is included in the packet: instructions, an example and two copies of the 1040A form. Both forms should be filled out and Stimulus Payment should be written across the top of the forms. One copy should be retained for records and the other should be mailed in the attached pre-addressed envelope to the IRS.

Many seniors have already filed soon after the stimulus payment was announced back in February. Filing only needs to be done once. The deadline to file is Oct. 15, but those who file before April 15 will receive payment from the earlier mailing of checks starting in May and running through the summer.

To have payment directly deposited into an account, there is a section on the back of the form for this information.

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of Madison County partners with the IRS to provide free tax counseling for individuals aged 60 and older through the Tax Counseling for the Elderly program. Tax counselors and tax sites will be available through April 15. The last Monday for the Oneida Library walk-in site is April 14.
