Canastota Police arrested Damian N. Cerio, 18, of Canastota for fourth-degree arson and third-degree criminal trespass for intentionally starting a fire at Roberts Street Elementary School on March 13.
The Canastota Fire Department had responded to a call at the school reporting a fire, which was thought to be a sensor trip. Shortly after the call around 7:45 p.m. the fire department discovered a fire had been started but had extinguished itself before firefighters arrived.
Police Chief James Zophy said after viewing the school's video system a suspect was revealed.
"Cerio was interviewed by police and admitted to starting the fire," Zophy said.
According to police documents, Cerio started a fire to pictures that were hung on the wall on the second floor. The fire burned the corkboard strip that held the pictures and scorched the wall.
The school was evacuated.
No injuries were reported.
Cerio was arraigned and committed to Madison County Jail with bail set at $5,000 cash or $10,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court March 20.
