Camillus Parks and Recreation Director Eric Bacon announced last week that a sports hall of fame has been established for former and current members of West Genesee's sports teams.
After an exploratory group formed in Oct. to set the standards for the hall, and after a series of meetings, the group agreed on the following criteria:
"A recognizable and respected member of the Town of Camillus and/or West Genesee School District community, either past or present, that has made a significant impact in the areas of sports and/or recreation."
Bacon said the initial idea for the hall came from a local resident.
"A member of the community contacted the Parks and Rec department with the idea," Bacon said. "They introduced us to the long history of West Genesee athletics."
The committee chose a hallway within the Camillus Municipal Building as the location of the hall. The committee has set May 3 to induct its first class into the hall of fame, with seven members or teams being chosen as the inaugural group. Bacon has not released the names of the teams or individuals that will be among the lucky few.
"It's top secret. That's how we're going to get people there. It's definitely the whose who of West Genesee sports. There have been so many successful teams in lacrosse, hockey and football."
When asked if last year's West Genesee Football team would be among the inductees, Bacon would not provide specifics.
"Let the debate bdgin," Bacon said.
