Oneida: Voters approve library budget

Voters in the Oneida Public Library Special Legislature District approved the library's proposed budget of $328,100 for fiscal year July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2009 by a vote of 152 to 50 on March 4. The taxpayers' share of the total is $281,600, an increase of 5.72 percent over last year.

In addition, voters elected for five-year terms on the library's Board of Trustees incumbent Patricia Albaugh, George L. Miller III and Robert Wilkins. The three races were uncontested.

"This is the 12th year in a row that the voters in the Oneida Public Library Special District have given us their vote of confidence for all the services that we at the library provide the community," said Carolyn Gerakopoulos, library director. "And it's not just our collection of books and media that the members of the community borrow, but they also enjoy the variety of our culturally enriching programs."

The voter turn-out this year was 22 percent higher than last year's.

"In spite of a budget increase and the tightening economy," Gerakopoulos said, "the voters came out in large numbers to demonstrate their loyalty to the library. We are particularly grateful this year for their continuing support."
