Speaker talks child safety
On Thursday, March 13, a free workshop will be offered. The topic is "Teaching Children About Personal Safety." Marta Hewitt from Child Care Solutions in Syracuse will offer the latest information about what to teach children about protecting themselves from harm. This one and a half hour program would be beneficial for parents and families, child care providers, teachers and anyone who works with young children. Cazenovia Children's House is sponsoring this educational opportunity that will take place in the Cazenovia Public Library Community Room from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
It is increasingly important to teach children about personal safety to reduce the risk of abuse. Ideas about "stranger danger" have not proven to be very effective because children talk to strangers all the time at the grocery story, meeting an aunt for the first time, saying 'hi' to a new teacher. Also, discussing 'good touch, bad touch' is very sensitive and can be confusing to young children. Ms. Hewitt will discuss what should be taught to children and how to present the information in a way that is appropriate for their age without unnecessarily scaring them.
Training certificates will be offered. Call 655-5437 to sign up but walk-ins will be welcomed.
