Canastota child succumbs to injuries

A Canastota 3-year-old succumbed to the injuries he sustained in an alleged assault Feb. 7. Madison County Sheriff Ronald I. Cary reported that Aadon B. Olmstead of 3228 Seneca Turnpike in the town of Lenox died at about 1:10 p.m. Saturday afternoon at SUNY Upstate Medical University.

Cary said Olmstead has been unresponsive and in critical condition at the Syracuse-area hospital since the evening of Feb. 7. According to police, the child's head was slammed into the concrete floor of the apartment he lived in, causing a subdural hemorrhage and skull fracture.

The caretaker of the child at the time of the incident, Jesse Snow, 23, Olmstead's mother's live-in boyfriend at the time, initially reported that the child fell down a flight of stairs, police said.

Snow was charged Feb. 8 with reckless assault of a child, a class D felony. He has been held at the Madison County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail since his arrest.

Sheriff's deputies have been working on this investigation in concert with the Madison County District Attorney's Office and Madison County Child Protective Services since the initial report.

"The death of young Aadon Olmstead is now an investigative matter involving the Onondaga County Medical Examiners Office," Cary said. "Efforts will be made to determine the cause and manner of death."

The death investigation results will then be turned over to the Madison County District Attorney's Office. District Attorney Donald Cerio Jr. said evidence in the matter would be put before a grand jury.

"The composition of the case will change appreciably [if the child dies]," Cerio said in an interview late last month. "There are other and different charges that can be presented to the grand jury. We've got the homicide statute to consider."
