Scibilia's Fruit and Flower Stand, a local landmark in DeWitt for nearly 70 years, was demolished Friday June 27. The stand was located on East Genesee Street near Erie Boulevard since 1939 when Scibilia's late parents opened the shop. Scibilia sold flowers in front of the building seasonally since the 1950s.
In recent years, the building and upkeep took a significant turn for the worse and DeWitt officials deemed it to be a health and safety hazard.
Owner Frank Scibilia tried to find ways to keep the building intact by hiring a structural engineer and an architect to survey the building and attempt to fix the problems the DeWitt Town Board addressed.
However, when Scibilia learned the cost to repair the building to the town's standards would have been upwards of $40,000, he said there was nothing he could do.
"I can't afford to put in $40,000 to fix it," he said in a February interview with the DeWitt Times. "That building means a lot to me. I have a lot of memories in that building."
Since Scibilia did not have the property cleared by June 30, the town had the building torn down with plans to bill Scibilia for the cost.
