"If I don't get $1,600 collectively, then no one will be parking here," Magley said.
Mayor Rick Penhall, trustees Harold Hopkinson and Mark Baum were present at the meeting, along with Magley, his wife, and three out of nine business owners who were invited: Pat Bundy, owner of Buffoon's and the building that houses Ling Ling's; Carol and Charles Porto; and Nat Tobin.
"I'm opposed of spending tax money specifically on this parking lot," Baum said. "I don't think this parking lot is a good investment for village tax dollars. I think it benefits very few businesses there."
Baum said he believes there are better ways to spend taxpayer dollars than the total $19,000 a year for the lot if they were to continue paying the $1,600 Magley wants.
Tobin is behind Baum: "The rent is exorbitant," he said. The village has already paid more than twice the taxes assessed value of the property, and we consider this to be a kind of extortion."
A vote was scheduled to take place at the Manlius Village Board meeting on June 24.
Mike Magley had not returned phone calls to the Eagle Bulletin by press time.
