Rhubarb Kitchen in Skaneateles turns 16

It seems like only yesterday when the Rhubarb Kitchen Shop in Skaneateles opened its doors. It was the summer of 1992. "Time sure flies when you're having fun!" owner Ellen Kluge said. "And now we're turning 16! Wow!"

Rhubarb is an upscale gourmet cookware and specialty food store located at 59 E. Genesee St., Skaneateles. The shop carries a wide variety of gourmet food items ranging from scones to preserves from sauces to dips. Many of the items are locally made! The store also carries bake ware, gadgets, cookbooks, mixers, aprons, cutlery and so much more!

"We have something for everyone," Kluge said, "and if we don't have it, we will gladly special order it for you." The shop also works closely with engaged couples in setting up their bridal registries and out-of-town customers are continually calling to have items shipped to them.

Michael and Barbara George, from Ohio, originally opened the shop, hiring Kluge as their store manager. Five years later, Kluge bought the building and the business...and the rest is history! Kluge says she has a lot of fun traveling throughout the year to different trade shows, which are often held in Chicago, New Orleans, San Francisco and New York City. "It's exciting to see what's new in the market, keep up on the latest trends and to look for those unique items for the store!"

Kluge says she can't thank her customers enough for all their support throughout these past 16 years. She is truly grateful to everyone. So in celebration of this huge milestone, and to say "thank you," the Rhubarb shop is throwing a "Sweet 16" Birthday Party, from 10 to 6 p.m Saturday Aug. 2 and 11 to 5 p.m. Sunday Aug. 3. Stop in and register to win prizes and taste some delicious food. Kluge and her staff are looking forward to this grand celebration and they hope to see you all there!
