Manlius native follows her dreams, opens doggie daycare

Leah Pekarsky graduated cum laude from Syracuse University College of Law, but not a lawyer did she become. Instead, Pekarsky followed her true passion and opened her own business called The Dog Gone Inn, a doggie daycare located in the village of Manlius. Pekarsky realized her life ambition while working with the international rescue group, Internet Miniature Pincher Service (IMPS) where she is the regional coordinator for the Carolinas and New England regions.

"I just decided -- the more and more I got involved with my rescue group -- this is a passion of mine," she said. "When I first told my parents that I wanted to do this, they were apprehensive. But they know me and I wanted to make a difference for the animals."

Pekarsky worked with veterinarians for more than 10 years, provided in-home animal care and training, and taught horseback riding lessons.

"I considered going to veterinary school but I didn't want to move and they all have residency requirements," she said as a proud Manlius native. "You have to live in a certain mile radius. I own my own home. My family is here. I grew up here. I love it here."

So what does The Dog Gone Inn provide? It's an all-in-one experience, Pekarsky says. Other than offering daycare, which also includes sleepovers, services consist of bathing, hygiene and health, massage, post surgical recovery, birthday parties and training. Outside playgrounds provide a place for dogs to exercise throughout the day.

"We do all sorts of enrichment activities," Pekarsky said. "We'll do things to keep them stimulated and active so when they go home at the end of the day they're plum tucker tired."

Another service Pekarsky provides is a "mini store" where pet owners can buy dog food, collars, leashes and supplements of the very best kind. Lupine leashes are fully guaranteed and Back to Basics dog food is human grade quality -- and wasn't included in any of the pet food recalls broadcast earlier this year, she said.
