Lake access and enforcement at heart of proposed resolution

By Willie Kiernan

Cazenovia Lake access was addressed in a public meeting attended by more than 100 people from across the area in the village municipal building Tuesday evening Jan. 22.

I'm proud of this community for the way they handled themselves tonight, said Trustee Tom Tait.

Hosted by the village board, the meeting reflected the issues and concerns of the community regarding a pending resolution that would open up the Lakeland Park boat launch to the general public.

"I think both sides of the issue were equally expressed," said Jim Stokes, Caz Village Attorney.

While some applauded the resolution for something long overdue, others warned of excess traffic, the declining health of the lake, declining property values, the effect of the McNitt State Park and the mistake of making quick decisions before the community comprehensive plan is in place.

"You are here as I am, because you love our jewel," said Patricia Woodcock.

Woodcock has the property right next to Lakeside Park and the boat launch. She handed out 8x10 glossies of the Lakeside dock at sunset to be passed around.

"This is one of the worst boat launches I have ever seen," said Joel Manchester, employed in the field of nautical audio and presumably a frequent surveyor of various boat launches.

The board needs to change a law on the books in order to enact on the resolution. They will discuss what they heard at their next monthly meeting and probably not have a vote until March.

"Let the comprehensive plan address the health of the lake," Said Sandy Holmes. "This is not a village issue; it is a Cazenovia community issue."

Last year, all Cazenovia School District residents were eligible to use the Lakeside Park boat launch as long as they applied for a permit. The permit was free for village residents and $25 for all others.
