Lysander seeks grant for trail

Lysander wants to connect the Seneca River Trail to the Sergei Yevich Trail in the village.

To do so, the town will apply for $100,000 in community development grants, funding aimed at low-income and/or public areas (such as parks) within a municipality. The grant would fund 75 percent of the project, leaving Lysander responsible for $25,000.

Besides the village, community development grants in Lysander are limited to Canton Woods Senior Center and certain handicap modifications to non-buildings.

The grant would provide a way to complete a big segment of the trail project inside the village, approximately 3,500 feet of trail from the town line to Lock Street. The trail would consist of a 10-foot wide stone dust path. An existing sewer easement would nullify any need to acquire the property.

"This was a missing link," Supervisor Barry Bullis said about the trail, adding that he spoke with the village board about the project and the board supported the effort.

A public hearing was held regarding the issue. The board approved the submission of the application and now awaits approval.
