The considerable talents of nearly 300 student musicians were on display as the Marcellus Central School District Fine Arts Department held its annual Festival of Bands on Feb. 6 in the Groeling auditorium. The concert was highlighted by the appearance of guest conductor Elizabeth B. Peterson. Peterson is an associate professor of music education and conductor of symphonic band at Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York. Beth Peterson is active as a clinician and guest conductor as well as being a new music reviewer for Instrumentalist Magazine. She also serves as a co-conductor of the Ithaca Concert Band. The 2008 Marcellus Schools Festival of Bands included performances by the Marcellus Elementary Band/Carmen Costa, Jr., Director, the Driver Middle School Band/Audrey Turner/Director, and the High School Concert and Symphonic Bands/Michael Cirmo, Director. The festival provides the opportunity for student musicians from different levels to interact and perform with each other and allows for our high school student musicians to serve as role models for our up and coming elementary and middle school instrumentalists. Highlights from the concert included "Renaissance Dance" performed by the Elementary Band, "Spectral Landscapes" performed by the Middle School Band, "Celebration and Dance" performed by the High School Concert Band and "Armenian Dances" performed by the High School Symphonic Band. The Festival of Bands came to its rousing conclusion as all four bands performed the traditional "Marcellus March."
