After a free throw from Marcellus forward Jeff Watson and two from Richards, the Lakers grabbed a 52-51 lead that they would not relinquish.
The Mustangs had two chances to go ahead in the last minute, but sophomore point guard Will Nolan turned the ball over on both of the crucial possessions. Skaneateles then hit four big foul shots to ice the game. Marcellus' Will Fiacchi hit a three-pointer at the buzzer, but it wasn't enough as the Lakers came out victorious.
It was certainly the play of the Skaneateles seniors who carried the load and propelled their team to the huge win. Richards played a solid all-around game where he was constantly penetrating the defense and either scoring or dishing to an open teammate.
Big man John Eppolito was an active presence down low and played solid defense. Throw in Tracy's timely shooting and add the defense of Devlen Murphy and that gives you the recipe for a senior-led victory.
"We had to do the simple things," Laker coach Karl Norris said. "Marcellus is a very good team and we thought if we could rebound and try to keep the tempo down that we would have a good chance to win.
"Both teams know each other so well. It was just a matter of making sure that their key guys didn't kill us, and (also) that we played a half-court game. I think we did that tonight."
The Skaneateles seniors accounted for 48 of the 56 points scored. Tracy led all scorers with 19 points, while Eppolito had 15 points and nine rebounds. Richards finished with 12 points. Junior Nick Pesarchick played a solid game off the bench as he contributed 12 rebounds of his own.
Fiacchi led Marcellus with 17 points, while Watson chipped in with 12 points. Dan Heil had nine points and Matt Fox earned eight points.
