Comfort, community at Fairmount Gardens

Fairmount Gardens, located just west of Fairmount at 4913 West Genesee St., offers affordable senior housing, comfort and amenities under one roof.

Built in 1980, Fairmount Gardens has always been a subsidized, independent senior complex. It offers features for impaired folks, like large entryways and bathrooms. A fully-stocked community room has a big-screen TV, DVD player, comfortable furniture, a walk-in kitchen and a sliding glass door that opens out to a deck. It can also be reserved for family functions.

Cathy Colleli is the new Property Manager at Fairmount Gardens. She says that although the facility is a non-assisted living complex, a few residents decided to plan events.

"Because it's independent living, we really don't really structure any activities for them," Colleli said. "We have a group of residents who actually took that upon themselves. They have a coffee hour every week, play bingo, plan holiday parties, or go out to dinner."

There are some requirements including an income limit, and ages are limited to 62 or up. Fairmount Gardens offers studio apartments with a galley kitchen and a common room that serves as the bedroom and living room, and a bathroom. The one-bedroom apartments contain a full-sized bathroom, bedroom, living room, a kitchen and storage space.

"The grounds and setting here is beautiful," Colleli said. "We're not in the middle of a city, so it's quiet. We're accessible to local stores, and we have a Centro bus stop right at the end of our driveway. It's also walker friendly. We have a nice sidewalk where our residents can walk to church and the community nearby. We try and be very senior-friendly. Our trash room is inside, the mailboxes are inside, as well as our laundry." They also offer a van that makes weekly trips to the grocery store and back.
