Persevering through the Sunday blizzard Dec. 7, three representatives from Cazenovia High School's National Honor Society, Matt Amidon, Emily Davies and Jen Budnar, accompanied by me, traveled to the Rescue Mission in Syracuse. We appeared on Channel 9 with Dave Eichorn during the special television phone-a-thon, "Movie with a Mission."
We presented the donations that were raised in our challenge, "Giving Up a Little to Feed a Lot."
This was a first-time effort organized by Amidon and Hannah Richard. It involved the challenge to give up some item of unhealthy food for a week. Students raised donations from sponsors then fasted from Nov. 17 through 22.
The stack of checks presented to Rescue Mission totaled $1,165, thanks to the large efforts of participating students in all grades. Special efforts were recognized and awarded prizes.
The top three fund-raisers were Budnar, Jacki Gott and Emily Davies. Xavier Coates came in with a very high total in fourth place, too.
As noted earlier, Rescue Mission was holding their phone-a-thon Dec. 7. Our contributions brought their total to nearly $30,000. This was more than they had raised in prior years, proving that we have a very giving community, especially in hard economic times.
Thank you to all who participated and donated. Hopefully, we will run such a successful challenge again and continue to feed the needy.
