The Greater Baldwinsville Ice Arena is home to 26 first-place skaters.
The Syracuse Figure Skating club, whose home ice is at the arena in Lysander, participated in a local competition known as the Skaneateles Figure Skating Invitational Dec. 5, 6 and 7. Sanctioned by US Figure Skating, the event consisted of synchronized and individual competitions. Out of 248 skaters from 31 participating clubs, the Syracuse Figure Skating club took first place.
"These girls were very excited to come in first place and receive a trophy," said Meg Keech, the skating coach.
The club's performances included Celina Carranti skating to the theme from "Polar Express," Laura Dawley skating to "Over the Rainbow," Nikki Sather skating to a medley from Mary Poppins, Sarah Henderson/Sarah Pflanz skating to Abba's "Dancing Queen," and Cassady Konu skating to a David Foster medley. Other skaters performed compulsory moves, jumps and spins that involved performing skills in a sequence without music.
"I am so proud of all of my skaters," Keech said. "Nikki and Sara both skated their personal best and both landed axle jumps in their programs. Celina and Laura both performed their free skate programs in competition for the first time and both skated beautifully. I am also proud of my skaters who fell and got right back up and finished their programs beautifully."
Above all, Keech said she was impressed with how supportive the girls were of each other.
"I loved how they cheered for each other and encouraged each other," she said. "It was great to see such great friendship, sportsmanship and team spirit in a sport that is usually very individual."
