Sylvan Beach lights up Sunday

he mayor and Trustees for the Village of Sylvan Beach were all present for the regular monthly meeting held in the village hall on December 15, 2008. The first order of business was to approve the minutes from December 1, as presented. An approval and audit of the bills for November 2008 totaling $84,507.37 followed.

A report by Joe Benedict, Highway Superintendent/ Village Administrator revealed there will be Christmas Caroling at the Band Stand in the park on December 21, at 6:00 P.M. The new LED lighting has been completed and will add to the spirit of the occasion.

The DPW for the village has been functioning for two full weeks with a staff of three men. "So far there have been no significant problems." Benedict said.

The campgrounds have been informed by letter that the village will be conducting an inspection next spring in accordance with Chapter 75 of the village code. Benedict and Bob Johnson, Codes Enforcement Officer for the village are discussing the proper procedures to follow.

The beach replenishment project is moving forward. A final review by the DEC and USACE TDK of the permit application was finished around November 18. It was then signed by the Mayor and forwarded.

As part of the permit consideration process, the USACE and DEC have published and sent out public notices to interested parties both public and private that may wish to comment on the beach replenishment permit.

A meeting between Oneida Nation Historic Resources Specialist, the USACE and Benedict at the upland disposal site went well. Any questions concerning the proposed excavation of dredged spoils and the project in general were answered.

"The period for public comment to the USACE will be completed in about two weeks. However the beach cannot be filled or graded when there is ice, at this time there is an ice cover adjacent to the beach." Benedict said.

The new zoning will be considered for approval by the board at the next meeting as the NY DOS has completed their portion of the process.

Village offices will be closed December 24 through December 27 for Christmas and on new years day, January 1, 2009.

The next regular village meetings will be on January 5, 2009 at 3:00 P.M. and January 19, 2009 at 7:30 P.M.
