Plans for a grocery store and an athletic field in the town of Manlius were halted Dec. 17 when board members voted down a zone change request 5-1, with Supervisor Mark Tetley the sole member in favor.
Representatives of Cazenovia-based Sphere Development LLC introduced plans for Manlius Place at last week's Dec. 10 meeting; the board tabled a vote until now.
The project included a 78,000-square-foot Price Chopper, three retail spaces and an athletic field for community and school sports programs. The chosen location? Route 92 near Enders Road, which is now zoned residential.
In order to have moved forward with the proposal, the town board would have had to approve the request to change the site to commercial zoning, after first presenting the proposal to the town planning board for recommendations.
Opponents voiced concern over traffic the new shopping center would create, while proponents pointed out that no matter what's eventually developed at this site, there will be an increase in traffic.
