Canastota Community Chest supports Boy Scouts

Thanks to the Canastota Community Chest, Boy Scout Troop 43 can purchase some of the items that fund-raising alone can't buy. Last year the troop was able to add to its gear a portable canopy to take on camping trips. It's used as a meeting place and refuge from inclement weather. And according to scout leader Tim Wimmer, some of the tents the troop uses are 20 years old. Something they've also added to the wish list.

Community Chest board member Diane Karan said she likes to hear how the money distributed among the organizations is put to use.

"It's nice to hear how we've made a difference locally and how much we've helped," Karan said.

"We appreciate all the help we get form the Community Chest," Wimmer said. "It comes in real handy."

Something the scouts would like to own but need to save for is a utility trailer to haul all its gear around in. Although half the money they receive from the Community Chest is given to its younger brothers in scouting, Cub Scout Pack 44, the Boy Scouts plan to set aside funds to buy a portable trailer in the future. Currently the scout's gear is stored in several garages.

"It would be nice to have one central location," Wimmer said.

What most Boy Scouts enjoy more than any of the other activities, Wimmer said, are the "camp-outs." Aside from the occasional week-long trip to Camp Russell in the Adirondacks, a couple times a year the scouts take a trip to Stony Pond located in Southern Madison County for fishing, hiking and to learn fire building skills, how to set up shelters and hold an official flag ceremony. Wimmer said popcorn sales allow the scouts to take these trips.

The scouts also participate in the annual Klondike Derby, hosted by different scouting communities each year and serves as competitions in such skills as life saving, fire building and winter survival. The derby focuses on teamwork.
