At a public hearing held Nov. 25 the Lenox town board adopted a law giving Cold War Veterans property tax exemption. Veterans who served from Sept. 2, 1945 through 1991 will receive a basic 10 percent assessment reduction. It is capped at $8,000 for military service and one-half their service-connected disability rating, capped at $45,000 of the real property tax law. The law goes into effect immediately after filing with the Secretary of State's office and applies to taxes of property after this year.
The board also adopted a local law "enlarging maximum eligibility income for partial real property tax exemptions for persons 65 years of age or older." Senior citizens making less than $19,499.99 will receive a 10 percent assessed value exemption from taxation. The local law increased the income by $899. Seniors earning less than $17,000 will receive a 25 percent reduction. Those earning zero to $12,000 a year will receive a 50 percent exemption.
Applications for Cold War tax exemption and senior citizen tax relief forms are available at the town office.
