East Syracuse man dead after train hits car

The State Police in Oneida are investigating a train/car fatal accident that occurred around 6:20 p.m. at the CSX railroad crossing on Canaseraga Road in the town of Sullivan.

As a 70 car CSX freight train headed westbound approached the Canaseraga Road crossing, engineers observed a 2003 Honda, operated by Peter L. Musacchio, 70, of 6453 Curwood Dr. in East Syracuse stopped on the tracks facing in a northerly direction. The crossing arms were down with the warning flashers activated. The engineers observed the vehicle back up almost clearing the tracks. The train then struck the right fender of the vehicle, spinning it around and ejecting Mussachio.

Mussachio was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to the Onondaga County Medical Examiner's office for post mortem examination. The investigation reveals that Mussachio, who lived alone, was apparently enroute from his residence to visit relatives in Sherrill. According to relatives Mussachio liked to drive on back roads when he traveled.

Initial reconstruction at the scene lead investigator's from the Troop D Forensic Investigation Unit to believe that Mussachio may have been in the process of removing his seatbelt to exit the vehicle when it was impacted by the train.

The investigation continues.
