A Day in the Life of Marcellian Bonnie Hanyak, Owner of Chocolate Pizza Factory

The Chocolate Pizza Factory in the village of Marcellus has to be one of my favorite shops to visit. Not only do I always leave with some delicious chocolate treats but there are also many unique gifts there. It's definitely a great place to do some holiday shopping.

Owner of Marcellus Pizza Factory, Bonnie Hanyak, has been in business for more than 17 years. She has been at the current location on Main Street for five years now. Previously, the store was located on South Street. She has been in the retail business for more than 20 years.

"Over time my shop has evolved into what it is today," Bonnie said. "I started out doing wreaths, flowers and baskets. The chocolate business came about from a need to include real quality chocolate in the baskets. I discovered the original "Cummings Candy" recipes, which were made in Marcellus since 1919, were for sale so I decided to bring them back. Today, the business is primarily specialty chocolate, using that original English Toffee recipe."

I asked Bonnie what her day is typically like.

"My day usually starts by making the English Toffee that goes into the pizzas and getting the chocolate ready for others to work with during the day. I spend time on the phone with customers answering inquiries about orders and products, I do all the buying (trying to make sure we don't run out of products to keep us going), take care of the scheduling of my associates," Bonnie said. "I do daily checks on accounts receivable and accounts payable with my bookkeeper and, when time allows, develop new products."

Aside for having a business in the area for more than a decade, Bonnie has also lived in Marcellus for 32 years.

"I was born and raised in Norwich. When I met my husband John, he had a business in Syracuse which brought me to the area," Bonnie said. "Marcellus, like the town I grew up in, is small and everyone knows everyone. People greet each other with a friendly 'hello.'"
