Crash on 690 disrupts fair traffic

The New York State Police are investigating a two vehicle serious personal injury accident that occurred shortly before 11:00 am today on I-690 eastbound in the Town of Geddes.

A truck used to transport metal trash dumpsters operated by Shawn Sanford, 41, of 614 North McBride Avenue, Syracuse, New York was east bound on I-690 approaching a concrete pedestrian bridge. For reasons unknown, the hydraulic lift unit of the truck was raised and as the vehicle passed under the bridge, the hydraulic unit struck the bridge causing extensive damage. At this point, a large section of concrete broke loose from the bridge and fell onto the windshield of a 2008 Buick Enclave which was traveling eastbound directly behind the truck. The Enclave continued and it is believed that it then struck the hydraulic system which had separated from the truck and was in the roadway, causing further damage to the vehicle.

The Enclave was driven by Allen P. Zimmer, 37, of 1651 Shallow Creek Trail, Webster, New York. The following passengers in the Zimmer vehicle sustained serious to minor injuries in the accident: Jennifer N. Zimmer, age 38, 1651 Shallow Creek Trail, Webster, New York, front seat passenger, was airlifted SUNY Health Science Center by Mercy Flight with serious injuries; David Delano, age 66, and Mary Ann Delano, age 63, of 6324 Whispering Woods Road, Williamson, New York, along with Nicholas Zimmer, age 11, Jonathan Zimmer, age 5, Alicia Zimmer, age 7, were passengers in the back and rear seats of the vehicle.

The lift truck is owned by Robinson Rolloff of Auburn, New York. The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information relative to this incident is asked to contact State Police at North Syracuse at 455-3886.
