Lack of knowledge and communication has caused an uproar in the Town of Vienna over changes in Fire Protection.
The town board discussed not renewing the contracts with the Cleveland Fire Protection District and the Camden Fire Protection Districts at its meeting Aug. 6.
According to Supervisor Nicol Baker, it all started when a representative of the Oneida County Emergency Offices, attended a workshop on the new Disaster Plan. It was revealed that most of the Towns in New York State no longer deal with the various Fire Districts. The Town is merely a go between for the Fire Districts and it makes the Town liable.
"There will be very little change, we are removing the politics by removing ourselves from the process and allowing the Fire Districts to deal directly with each other. It's a betterment for the whole Town to let it go through the Fire Districts." Baker said
The Fire Districts dealing directly with each other will give an added advantage to the taxpayers. They will be given the opportunity to vote for a Fire Commissioners in their District, something they cannot do with the Town in charge.
There will be a work session, open to the public, dealing with this issue at 6 p.m. Aug. 27 in the town hall in North Bay.
