Endurance, skills thrives at lifeguard competition

Lifeguards from across the state competed for top scores in Water Safety techniques Aug. 5 during the 40th annual competition held at Green Lakes State Park.

A total of 18 teams, each comprised of three lifeguards, competed in events that proved their endurance and skills demonstrated in their everyday job duties.

The competition consisted of the following six events that ran continuously through the day: Rescue board/swim/row; two-guard rescue with CPR practical; three-guard relay; deep water rescue; first aid practical and ring buoy toss.

First place winners represented Onondaga County Parks: Brothers Dan and Connor Liddell who work at Jamesville Beach and Kayla Ehle who works at Oneida Shores.

The event was hosted by the New York State Parks -- Central Region; sponsored by Eagle View Restaurant at Green Lakes State Park and Griffin Professional Shops.

"Without their generosity, we could not do this grand event," said Bonnie Ward, event organizer.
