Lorenzo offers movie
By Willie Kiernan
The Friends of Lorenzo are sponsoring a free movie to be shown on the lawn at the mansion.
"Make the scene at Lorenzo for a blast from the past," said Casey Frazee, Lorenzo State Historic Site Education and Private Events Coordinator.
The free movie is "High Society," from 1956 starring Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly. Throw in Louis Armstrong to lead the band and it becomes quite the all-star lineup.
"Get a kick out of a free flick on the front lawn," Frazee said.
This musical romantic comedy is a remake of The Philadelphia Story and tells the tale of the wealthy and formerly married couple of Tracy Lord (Kelly) and Dexter Haven (Crosby) on the weekend of Kelly's remarriage to George Kittredge. Dexter is still in love with Tracy, and the love triangle grows when a reporter and photographer (Sinatra and Celeste Holme) from "Spy Magazine" arrive to report on the nuptials.
Opening on July 17, 1956, High Society garnered good reviews despite often being compared as being a lesser offering to the film on which it was based, "The Philadelphia Story." Variety noted: "Fortified with a strong Cole Porter score, film is a pleasant romp for cast toppers Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly and Frank Sinatra. Their impact is almost equally consistent. Although Sinatra has the top pop tune opportunities, the Groaner makes his specialties stand up and out on showmanship and delivery, and Kelly impresses as a femme lead."
Popular snacks and drinks from the 1950s, as well as popcorn, will be available for purchase. The movie will be offered weather-dependent. Please call Lorenzo at (315) 655-3200 for more information.
