Two hundred of our local Air National Guard members returned home this week from a two-month deployment in Iraq. Their sacrifice is deeply appreciated and all of Central New York thanks them for their service, at home and abroad.
In welcoming the Guard members home, Dan Maffei said: "We are grateful for these brave men and women's service, are thankful to their families for their shared sacrifice- the 174th Fighter Wing's safe arrival home is a relief. Now we must work to bring the war in Iraq to an end by drawing down our troop level in a timely and responsible manner. The Bush administration's poor planning has stretched our service men and women, reservists, and their families to the breaking point. It is past time to bring them all home for good."
Supporting our Veterans at Home
The House of Representatives recently passed a number of measures to support our Veterans, providing millions of dollars above and beyond what has been supplied in the past for mental health counseling, homeless Veterans assistance and a new GI Bill. It is time for the Senate to take up these worthwhile bills and make sure they pass.
"Support our Troops" cannot just be an empty slogan that, if repeated often enough, is equated with patriotism. Supporting our troops requires real commitment to their health and wellbeing, and providing financial support so they can obtain a quality education upon return from duty.
Dan Maffei will fight for legislation to support our Veterans and enhance the facilities like
Hancock Field and Fort Drum.
