Westhill girls lax outscores Marcellus

In order to have a full amount of success, the Westhill girls lacrosse team will need to make consistent defensive stands.

Until then, though, the Warriors would be wise to keep on attacking, as it did Tuesday when it proved to have more endurance than Marcellus in a wild 23-16 victory over the Mustangs.

Arriving with a 6-1 record, Marcellus wanted to move up the Liberty National division standings, and matched goals with Westhill in the course of a fast-paced first half. By the time the teams caught their collective breaths at the break, the Warriors and Mustangs were in an 11-11 tie.

All Westhill had to do is get more possession of the ball in the second half -- which it did, giving Marcellus far less chances to convert and allowing the hosts to build a comfortable margin.

Laura Zimmerman piled up six goals and four assists as her talented senior mate, Katie Doherty, put up four goals and two assists.

Carolyn Clark, Mackenzie Rainone and Colleen Lowery got their own there-goal hat tricks, with Clark adding two assists. Annie O'Connor had two goals and one assist, with Samantha Marshall adding a goal and two assists. Brenna Rainone also scored.

For its part, Marcellus had six different players with multiple goals, though none more than Meghan Connors and Nora Barry, with three goals apiece.
