The program for older children stresses the importance of confidence, discipline, fitness and setting goals. Adults enrolled at LaVallee's benefit from fitness, flexibility and stress relief, Andrello said.
Of course, students gain these benefits all while learning important self-defense and personal protection skills. Andrello said that it is stressed that martial arts should be used only for self-defense.
"Although we teach highly effective self-defense skills, we hope that no one will ever have to use them," she said. "We also teach our students how to be smart and avoid dangerous situations. Getting away from an attacker is better than having to fight."
