Since beginning as a summer farm stand in 1934, the Hawkins Family of Green Hills Farms has employed generations of local families including four of their own. Today Gary and Heather Hawkins are at the helm of this independent grocery store on Salina Street in the valley. The store's reputation for friendliness and strong customer service is well deserved.
The Hawkins recently topped their team with a food guru, Martha Williams, a local food specialist and advocate for economical, healthy and delicious food. She will provide simple tasty recipes and expert advice for creating easy, fresh and healthy meals for Green Hills' customers.
Hailing from a long line of women who lovingly cooked for their families, Williams shares Green Hills' passion for providing fresh ingredients with simple, healthy tips to make gathering around the table with family and friends, nutritious, delicious, economical and time efficient, which ultimately adds up to good clean fun.
"In the fast paced culture we live in, sometimes it is easy to forget that time spent preparing foods together can be quite enjoyable, particularly when combined with the appreciation of sitting down together to eat the good, nutritious foods that have been lovingly prepared," Heather Hawkins said, "Martha wants to help families realize how easy and beneficial cooking together can be-and that it can fit right into a busy schedule with minimal planning and preparation."
Williams interests started
Talk with Martha about food, and the passion is palpable. She loved grocery shopping with her mother, gathering ingredients and grinding (and smelling) the coffee beans in the big red coffee grinder at the store. Her dad tended a big garden. As a girl she set the seeds in perfect little rows and learned to recognize the vegetables at their optimal freshness, watching the process and tasting the tender raw ingredients.
