Chittenango: Salt storage building approved

The budget passed March 25 for the 2008-09 fiscal year will use $25,000 from capital reserves for building the shelter. Another $50,000 would be taken out of the unappropriated fund balance. These plans are tentative and dependent on how much fund balance remains available at the end of the fiscal year.

The decision will be made by this summer.

Should the proposal be approved, construction could start in the late summer or early fall.

Snyder said he anticipates switching over from regular road salt to Cargill's ClearLane as soon as 2010. While Clearlane still uses salt, it is more environmentally friendly. The product requires no stone dust, which clogs storm sewers, blows choking clouds of dust on dry, windy days and requires heavy-duty cleanup.
