On the brink of joining the elite, the West Genesee boys swim team did not waste any time making an impact in the 2008-09 season. In fact, sophomore Ben Seketa and junior Pat O’Donnell both assaulted the record books in the course of the Wildcats’ season-opening 106-74 rout over Rome Free Academy last Thursday night. Seketa, who earned a gold medal at the Empire State Games last summer in Cortland, set a new West Genesee school mark in the 100-yard breaststroke when he posted a time of 1:01.32. This came right after O’Connell, competing in the 100 backstroke, tore through the pool in 54.56 seconds, setting his own school record. O’Connell and Seketa are part of a group of young, talented WG swimmers whose presence make the team a threat to established powers like Liverpool, Auburn and Jamesville-DeWitt/CBA. And every one of them seemed to get a win against RFA. At the start, O’Donnell, Tim Gallivan, Nick Lorusso and Rob Kotheimer joined together to win the 200 medley relay in a clocking of 1:44.32. Kotheimer, on his own, won the 50 freestyle in 23.89 seconds, while Gallivan won the 200 individual medley in 2:18.65. Kyle Crompton ripped through the 100 butterfly in 55.34 seconds, and Carson Elias needed just 49.86 seconds to prevail in the 100 freestyle. Carson Elias prevailed in the 500 freestyle (5:06.03) and Kevin Taylor earned a victory in the 200 freestyle in 2:08.63. The Wildcats’ first road trip comes Wednesday night, when it goes to Oswego.
