No matter how many other times he won races, on ovals and on winding courses, Marcellus senior cross country runner Chris Stogsdill remembered the rare instances where he got beat. Thus, for a whole year Stogsdill carried with him the memory of the 2007 state championship meet, where Honeoye Falls-Lima’s Alex Deir beat him by seven-hundredths of a second to deny him the individual state title. The rematch between Stogsdill and Deir would come in last Saturday’s 2008 edition of the state championship meet, held this time at Sunken Meadow State Park on Long Island. Back on Sept. 27, they had clashed at the Genesee Valley Invitational in Rochester, with Stogsdill prevailing by a comfortable margin. This race would prove closer. By the time they reached the two-mile mark and the famed “Cardiac Hill” portion of the wet, soggy Sunken Meadow course, Stogsdill was in front, but still had to look back several times as Deir kept close tabs, waiting for any sign of weakness. It never came, and when Stogsdill lunged across the line in 16 minutes, 11.8 seconds, he had bested Deir by 3.8 seconds, earning sweet payback for that had taken place 12 months earlier. As Stogsdill got ready for this Saturday’s State Federation championship at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls, teammate Jesse Garn basked in fine performance as he ran to 13th place in 17:02.1, less than a minute behind Stogsdill. Garn, Stogsdill and the rest of the Section III All-Stars ended up in third place, with 374 points, just behind Section V (254 points) and Section XI (349 points) for that top spot. Over in the girls portion of the state meet, Skaneateles senior Rachel Hosie nearly led the Section III All-Stars to the top in that portion of the Class C championship meet. They finished with 252 points, just behind Section I (222 points) at the wire. On her own, Hosie was sensational, earning sixth place in a time of 20:10.1 on the wet, soggy Sunken Meadow Course. She was just behind Pulaski’s Katie Weisenberger, the OHSL and Class C sectional champion, who finished second in 19:38.8 as CBA’s Katie Brislin took 10th place. And in her first exposure to state competition, Marcellus eighth-grader Elizabeth Dean had a solid showing in the Class B individual race, taking 32nd place in a time of 20:41.9 as Amherst’s Brenna Symoniak (18:50.6) prevailed.
