Roxboro Road Middle School has always had a special relationship with the military.
“Because we’re so close to the air base and the recruiting centers, the military has always been an important part of our school community,” said Principal Steve Wolf. “We’ve always had a number of children with family members in the service, and now is no exception. A lot of kids have loved ones overseas right now.” In recognition of that fact, last year the school established a support group for children with parents or other family members in the military. Now, RRMS is taking their support one step further.
This year, RRMS’ Building Planning Committee has set up “Roxboro Gives Back,” a program designed to help students support local servicemen and women. Roxboro Gives Back will hold events all year long in order to keep the troops at the forefront of the kids’ minds. The first event will be a letter-writing campaign, which will kick off in October. “It’s important for the troops to be in touch with their community,” Wolf said. “We have a lot of local people over there, either parents of our students or C-NS graduates or other community members. We want them to know that people are still thinking about them over here and that we haven’t put them out of our minds. We want them to know that we care about who they are and what they do.”
