From the distance runners at Fayetteville-Manlius to the sprinters at Christian Brothers Academy, local girls track and field teams flourished during last Thursday’s state qualifying meet at Cicero-North Syracuse’s Bragman Stadium. Three different times, F-M prevailed in distance events. In the 1,500-meter run, Mackenzie Carter set a new personal mark with her time of 4:41.36, as she and teammate Molly Malone (who finished second in 4:42.35) pulled away from the field. Courtney Chapman did the same in the 3,000-meter run, striving to break the 10-minute mark at the wire before settling for a winning time of 10:00.73. Kathryn Buchan ran her way to second place, in 10:12.68. And in the 4×800 relay, it turned into a tight duel between F-M and CNS. Carter, Colleen Mulvihill, Alex Chapman and Katie Sischo combined to help the Hornets, in a time or 9:22.57, beat the Northstars (9:23.96) by 1.39 seconds. Jessica Marini continued her season-long dominance of the 400-meter hurdles, racing to a time of 1:04.07, nearly two seconds clear of Chittenango’s Kaylee Greene. Kathryn Fanning earned third place in the 800-meter run in 2:19.75. CBA had Melissa Zajdel taking charge in the sprints. She ran the 200-meter dash in a top time of 25.34 seconds, holding off Utica-Notre Dame’s Gennie DePass, the 100-meter champion. From there, Zajdel rolled to a second win in the 400-meter dash in 58.56 seconds, the only girl in the Division II field to break the one-minute mark. And she also teamed with Nicole SanGiacomo, Nadine Sosa and Edie Douglas to win the 4×100 relay, edging past South Jefferson, 51:47 seconds to 51.49.
