The town of Van Buren and the village of Baldwinsville are both looking into a new grant that will help to repair and build sidewalks.
The federally funded grant targets the two-mile radius surrounding schools in an effort to promote walking and biking to school. Van Buren Councilor Claude Sykes has spearheaded the search for funds for Van Buren and hopes to land some money to build sidewalks along Van Buren Road and Rout 48, which would be used by Ray Middle School students.
The village hopes to secure grant money to assist in the cost of the new sidewalk repair program being implemented throughout the village. Mayor Joe Saraceni said about 63 percent of the sidewalks in the village need to be replaced and they are only getting worse.
Both municipalities plan to contact state politicians including Assemblyman Bill Magnarelli and Senator John DeFrancisco to help seek out the funds.
VB creates f/t recreational supervisor position
Van Buren has to make the recreational supervisor position full-time.
In a 5-2 vote, board members were split on whether to make the position full time again after taking six months to evaluate the department's needs. After reviewing information supplied by the Parks and Recreation Director Cathy Perkins, Councilor Wendy Van Der Water said five of the 11 duties listed were duties of the director of recreation, the department's other full-time position.
"I just wish we had a little bit more information to justify the full time position," said Councilor Ronald Dudzinski.
Van Der Water suggested taking more time to review the matter, but Supervisor Mary Crego said a decision needed to be made before then to comply with the civil service department.
"(Perkins) has convinced me this position has to be full time," Councilor Claude Sykes said.
